"Qian Li Ma" means "1,000 Li Horse." The Li is a Chinese unit of distance equal to a half a kilometer. The 1,000 Li Horse was a horse fabled to travel 1,000 Li (about 300 miles) in one day. Such horses were sought after by royalty during the Tang Dynasty, when horses reached their peak in Chinese cultural reverence. This painting was made to reflect the Tang style of horse portraiture.
